Longarm Quilting FAQ'S
Kathi is in charge of the quilting process. Her husband, Mike, is in charge of the maintenance of the equipment. We just love our Gammill quilting machine that is guided by the computerized Statler Stitcher Creative Studio software because the stitching is so precise.
Edge-to-edge quilting is a quilting design that covers the entire quilt, regardless of quilt pattern, borders or sashings. The pattern is repeated across each row and from the head to the foot of the quilt. This type of quilting is budget-minded and an excellent choice for quilts that will be loved and used.
That depends somewhat on the quilting design that you choose. Fullness in a quilt top is best "disguised" by selecting a design that meanders over the whole quilt without crossing over itself. Another suggestion might be to use to use a higher loft batting.
The backing of your quilt will be pinned to a zipper attached to the head and foot ends of the quilting machine. The batting is placed on the backing, then the quilt top on top of the batting. The top is held in place by basting to the backing and batting. It is important that the backing and batting be 6 to 8-inches longer and wider than the quilt top to allow room for the clamps that hold the quilt in place on the sides. It is a good idea to stay stitch a scant quarter-inch around the outer edge of your quilt top to prevent seams from coming unstitched.
Batting is a personal preference, but for infant and children quilts I suggest 100 % cotton batting. Our selection varies from time to time, but usually offer 80% cotton/20% poly blend, 100% poly, 100% cotton, or 100% wool. Cotton battings "breathe" and are somewhat heavier, while polyester batting is lighter weight and tend to be warmer because it does not "breathe" like cotton. Wool is warm in the winter and cool in the summer because of its breathability. Prices vary as do the width of each batting, so please consider those issues when selecting a batting. You may supply your own batting if you prefer.
If you want your quilt binding applied before it is returned, pre-approval is required, and you must provide adequate binding fabric. Binding is machine stitched to the top and then hand stitch it to the back. If you prefer, I can stitch it to the top and you can do the handwork.
I ship using Priority Mail through the US Postal Service unless you request otherwise. The cost is variable depending upon the distance shipped and the weight and size of your parcel. If you want insurance, please indicate the amount on the Work Order that you fill out.
Payments can be made with a personal check, money order, or bank draft written to Quilting Hideaway, or through PayPal. Any returned check will be subject to a $35 fee.
The edge of the quilt should not exceed 144 inches, and the length of the quilt does not matter as it will be wound on the rollers of the machine.
The quilting charge includes the actual machine quilting only. All services offered are charged individually so you can be in control of the cost as much as possible.
Your backing and batting must be 6-8 inches longer and wider than the quilt top measurements. This allows for the side clamps to hold the quilt in place while the machine stitches and allows for the machine to stitch close to the edges without hitting the clamps. It is better to have too much backing & batting than not enough. To avoid puckering, I recommend that selvages be avoided in the seams of a quilt back.
